The Essentials For Managing Your Social Media Account
Out of all the services I provide, I am definitely asked the most about social media and how easy it is when it comes to managing your social media account. It has so many benefits that I can see why business owners want to get to know it more and feel like they are using it properly. It is easy to just think that you can just post every so often, show off what you do and an audience will form that will then buy from you. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as that, you need to be organised and have purpose behind what you’re doing. You also need to do it well, no one likes to see blurry images or badly put together graphics on their newsfeed. So, I’ve decided to put together a list of the four essentials I think you need to get the most out of managing your social media.
Four Essentials For Managing Your Social Media Account
A strategy
I know ‘strategy’ can seem like a big scary business word, but basically what it means is you need to know what you are trying to achieve on social media and have a plan in place to do this. When I am helping clients set their social media strategy, before I even think about managing your social media, I always go back to basics. As business owners we think that we need to just continue to tell people what we do and this will encourage them to work with or buy from us. That’s not the case, you need to share purposeful content to stand out. Everyone has a purpose behind their business, so when I try to remind clients of their purpose I ask the following questions.
Why did you start this business?
Who is your audience?
Why do they need you?
What are their pain points?
When do they usually get in touch with you?
What do you need them to do to convert? (For example, do they buy from your website? Do they book an enquiry call?)
Usually when clients hear these questions they then see different content ideas to share with their audience, rather than just telling people what they do. I would highly recommend you take time out to answer these questions, and I guarantee you’ll feel more inspired to create content too.
2. Branding
In 2020, there were over 25 million business accounts on Instagram. If you’re going to use this platform to promote your business then you’re going to need to stand out and nailing your branding is how you can do this. Managing your social media account is a part of your brand so that means, using the same fonts, colours and post layouts, so your followers immediately recognise your posts.
As I use my brand colours all the time in my posts I have heard so many times that when someone sees the green or light pink, they know it’s me. It is also important to ensure your social media looks the same as all other customer brand touch points. For example, if part of your social media strategy is to send your audience to your website, then when they land on your website it must look and sound the same as your social media profiles. This is so when they land they aren’t confused and then leave, they need to recognise the branding straight away.
3. Professional Looking Templates
Sometimes you have to post information on your profiles and this is when I would recommend investing in some templates. There is nothing worse than seeing a good Instagram feed being let down by a badly put together graphic. Canva is a free design tool which is really easy to use, even for beginners. Most templates that can be bought online are for Canva meaning you can easily adapt them to use your own branding. This is important, even if you do have templates remember to change the colours and fonts to your own so it doesn’t dilute your branding.
4. Managing Your Social Media Account With A schedule
To use social media effectively it needs to become part of your working scheduling. You need to fit in the time of creating content and getting it scheduled or posted, into your working life. This is when having a schedule can help. I would recommend at the start of every quarter entering key events in your business that you are aware of, then at the start of each month planning the topics for each week and then breaking these down into days. This helps you ensure your content is purposeful and is relevant to your business goals and what you’re trying to achieve.
There is obviously a lot that goes into managing a social media account that I haven’t covered, including scheduling and checking insights etc, the list goes on, but I think these are the essentials to managing your social media account and if you have these to start with then you are laying the right foundations.
